Vinegar--Name Brand vs. Off Brand

White Vinegar

yellow Vinegar

We had friends that we used to camp with a lot. The man was a Heinz salesman.

I always had my trusty bottle of vinegar with us when we camped because I use a lot of vinegar when I make certain foods. I never bought the top brand of vinegar, which was Heinz, because the off brands were a lot cheaper--and I thought tasted just as good.

Tom, the friend who was the Heinz salesman, would always taunt me about using the off brand. He said Heinz was much better. I would tell him that vinegar was vinegar and it didn't matter what brand it was. It was much the same as with aspirin. Any brand of aspirin is just aspirin and it doesn't matter about the brand name.

We often discussed the matter about vinegar and he never convinced me that Heinz was any better than my off brand.

Later when we were on a camping trip and I had my bottle of off brand vinegar out using it, he said to me, "You know, I checked with some of the top Heinz people and they told me that what you said is true, vinegar is vinegar and it is the same no matter what the brand.

I was shocked at his honesty about it. He was a very stubborn guy and I couldn't believe that he would confess to me that I was right about the vinegar.

So since that time I always buy the cheapest brand of vinegar I can find. I do like the yellow, or apple cider, vinegar better than the white vinegar. White vinegar is good if you are using it in laundry but yellow is best for cooking. However, I recently was out of yellow vinegar and I have been using some white that I had on hand. I have to admit that I really couldn't tell the difference between the white and yellow. Some brands may have fancier labels and seem to be better than others but actually they are all the same!

So save yourself a little change and buy cheap vinegar and cheap aspirin, you'll never know the difference!

I use apple cider vinegar with "mother"...and have a tablespoon every day. It's great stuff and is supposedly very good for you. Knock on wood, I hardly ever have sinus problems since taking it and it is also good for weight loss. nh
