A Double Tragedy

My cousin, Nellie Hedger, and her five children

Many years ago, probably about seventy or so years ago, Nellie, my aunt Lizzie's daughter, lost two of her children by a drowning. The smallest boy in the front and the one she is holding or the other small boy in the middle of the second row--I am not positive which are the ones who drowned.

They were out playing in the snow and ice and were playing on a pond which was frozen over with ice.

The two small boys broke through the ice and into the water. No adult was there and by the time the other kids got Nellie's attention the boys were already drowned.

It was a double tragedy to lose two children at one time. Nellie was hard hit by it.

Someone made a picture of the two boys in the coffin, they were buried together, and I did see the picture at one time. But I do not have the picture now.

Last summer my niece Debbie drove us around visiting places and she took us to the cemetery where they were buried. It was a sad sight. We could hardly find the graves for the weeds. No one keeps the cemetery cleaned out. Of course Nellie has been gone for a few years and the siblings don't live near so there is no one who has an interest in taking care of the graves.

I think many times about what a terrible thing it was that happened so many years ago.
