Mom and Pop Stores
Pictured above are two examples of the old Mom and Pop stores. Many times they were actually just added on to the people's home and used as a store.
In several places that I have lived there were small stores that were in a residential neighborhood. The restrictions on operating a store were very lax many years ago and you saw stores just about on every corner.
Back then prices were so low that most stores had pretty much the same prices for things they sold. There were no large supermarkets so all prices were mostly equal.
In a way it was kind of handy because I could walk just a few steps and buy whatever I needed at any time of the day. Of course then the stores were mostly open from nine to five. Now the supermarkets are open 24 hours a day seven days a week.
The big supermarkets have killed the poor little Mom and Pop stores. I do not know of any small stores in Fort Wayne any more. We have about four large supermarkets that have several branch stores situated in all areas in Fort Wayne. So no one has to drive very far to get to a large supermarket.
I now have to walk ten times as much in the supermarket as I did in the small Mom and Pop stores. But it is nice to have such a large selection of products available in one place.
I would like to see the large supermarkets with the prices that were charged at the old Mom and Pop stores, wouldn't you? I am dreaming, you know!
